What I disagree with the most is who is Blackpink target. He's totally right with his line about Blackpink being "kpop for non kpop fans"īut he's totally wrong in reasoning why this happens I died twice reading, some people can’t just accept bp is loved and popular without the theories But as a group endeavor i think their strategy makes sense.Įdit: Second biggest fumble was not making the tiara from the cover of The Album into merch, literally unforgivable Display More Lisa and Rose would have both gotten a nice Billboard 200 spot, probably top 5, and there would have been more music for their off year.

I guess my agreement here is that the strategy is actually a really good one, i don't think they're leaving money on the table as a group, the only fumble i think is like a real big fumble was not making the solos into full projects/EPs. Obviously they still have fans who are interested in critical/musical discussion and direction and all that, and fans who are tuned into the wider kpop landscape, but those fans definitely aren't the focus or the goal of the project and are moreso a secondary consequence of how big they are and the potential their project had/has. Blackpink is the same, it's kpop for non-kpop fans. It's like how Drake is probably the most popular rapper in the world but if you got on a hiphop forum he's not even top 10, he's a rapper but he's not appealing to "rap fans". It's also why BP are fairly unpopular on forums like this compared to their wider impact, the people here are the most tuned into kpop and the most interested in kpop from an artistic or at least somewhat critical standpoint.

Not like that's their entire fanbase but i think they're way more child/tween focused than people realize and their marketing and release strategy, even their merch, is tailored towards them.Īdmittedly i think adopting this has lead to less interesting music and much less exciting choices artistically. I won't say i particularly like anything about it but once you realize that Blackpink is a group being marketed at a very young, extremely global audience who just wants to play the same songs 9000 times in a row, buy dolls based on the members, and pretend they live a rich fabulous life via instagram it makes a lot more sense, their target audience aren't here for the full albums, they don't need endless vlives most of them don't know what vlive is, they don't care about lyric quality or dance difficulty, a lot of them are literally 9 year olds who will joyfully watch the KTL MV all day on repeat.
